Perfect Homemade Chai Tea Latte Recipe

I’ve been making this homemade chai tea recipe for years. My mom gave me a photocopy of her crumbled old photocopy. Those always seem to be the best recipes, am I right?

It’s very easy to whip up and makes about 8 cups worth, so it’s perfect if you’re prepping ahead or having a dinner party.

Why should I make a homemade chai tea latte?

I’ll tell you why.. because it will be more delicious than any chai tea latte you get at a cafe or Starbucks. I don’t use a chai tea bag. I make it from scratch with spices you will most likely have in your cabinet.

It’s shocking how easy it is to make this and how much more delicious it is than the tea bag or store bought version.

How Do I Make a dirty chai?

Yes. All you have to do to make it a dirty chai is add a shot of espresso to each individual serving.

Chai Tea Latte Ingredients

Like I said, you really don’t need many or any unusual ingredients. Here is what you need for your chai tea latte:

  • Water
  • Oat Milk
  • Black or Earl Gray Tea
  • Honey

Here’s some notes on the ingredients. You can use any plant based milk you want. I’ve had success with light coconut milk and almond milk. I think it’s the creamiest using the oat milk.

You can use tea bags or loose leaf tea. Think 1 teaspoon of loose leaf for every one tea bag. I prefer Mountain Rose Herbs Earl Grey

Chai Tea Latte Directions

To make your chai tea, you just have to combine all the ingredients into a pot on the stove on medium heat and bring it to a simmer.

You’ll simmer it for 30 minutes and then take it off the heat and take the bay leaf and tea out.

It is essentially done, but if you want it to be a fancy chai tea latte, there is an extra step.

Make Your Latte

The only thing you need to do to turn it into a chai tea latte is to froth the chai tea. So you can buy a milk frother my aerolatte. That is what will give it a nice foamy top like mine the picture.

You can be extra too and sprinkle a little cinnamon on top. Enjoy it! It’s delicious hot or iced. It will last a few days in the refrigerator.
